Another loop in Gatineau
I was alone in Gatineau for the first time yesterday. Grant was in NB, or on his way back from NB, Trev was also in NB and Steve stayed home sick for once in his lifetime. I decided that after taking the entire week off from physical activity (except for Ultimate) that I really had no choice but to go and cycle by myself.
When I showed up at the parking lot where we normally start our ride into the closed roads of Gatineau I was dismayed to find it full. Not just full actually but overflowing. Crap! I really didn't know my way around Gatineau but I knew there were other parking lots I could park at, it was just a matter of finding them. I toyed around with the idea of driving back across the river and parking at the Lawson's place but decided against it. Luckily I found a dirt parking lot just down the road and parked there without wasting too much time searching.
According to gmap-pedometer the loop was 43 kms, but according to my computer it was over 44 kms. I noticed the same thing on my ride down to Brockville the week before, gmaps said it was 92 kms but my bike computer said it was over 95. Perhaps it's because I didn't measure the circumference of my wheel and just went with the default number for my tire size. Anyways, it was a good ride, if a bit lonely. I didn't drop to granny even once during the day so I feel like I'm making a little progress as the summer wears on.
Anyways, looking forward to getting out with the boys again this coming weekend. Perhaps we'll do two loops?

It's probably gmap-pedometer. I mean, they aren't tremendously accurate, so I'm guessing that a 2-3% error is probably pretty likely. Your bike computer probably does better than that... then again, it could be the combination of two errors... ;)
I don't think gmap accounts for altitude. That and you're not entering an infinite number of points on your map.
Altitude shouldn't matter should it? I mean if you trace the road, it really doesn't matter if it goes up and down. Actually - now that I actually type that out, I see how altitude WOULD affect distance. As for the infinite number of points - point taken. :) I guess it comes up with a pretty good approximation considering...
