2008 disc golf has already begun!
The original plan (that Trev had proposed) was to get out for some DG on Jan 1st. Sadly that didn't happen. It was a combination of things, one of which was the approaching snow storm, another was the fact that Amy was sicker than a dog and wouldn't have liked to be left alone with Liam while I was out having fun. Anyways, suffice it to say we didn't get out on Jan 1st. We did however, get out this past Saturday, Jan 5th for a round. It was Trev, Dave and myself who went. I believe a good time was had by all, but at the very least, a good time was had by me.
Prior to this outing, I had made a trip to MEC to pick up some new boots. I didn't previously have a proper pair of winter boots so I planned to pick up a pair of Baffin Bison Winter Boots. They have an active temperature rating of -35C, they are quite tall (good for deep snow) and are only $89. As a bonus - they are made in Canada! Sadly though - they didn't have my size. As a result, I had to limit my search for new boots to ones they had in my size. I ended up with a pair of Columbia boots - these ones to be exact. Since they weren't as tall as the Baffins, I decided that a pair of gaiters were also in order. As luck would have it - there was one pair of size large left which I snatched up before someone else could. As you'll see, this was the best purchase I could have made for the upcoming DG outing.
When we arrived at the course on Saturday morning, we noted that it looked fairly untouched. There were a couple sets of snowshoe tracks at some of the holes but other than that - unmarked snow pretty much everywhere. After putting on my new gaiters, we started into the course. Snow up to our knees pretty much. We attempted to stay on the snowshoe track, when it was available, but even then we were sinking into the snow. These conditions made driving very challenging! You effectively had to stand still while driving which seemed to take quite a bit of distance off our throws. By the time we were done three holes we were already getting tired - turns out slogging through knee deep snow is quite a work out!
By the time we finished hole 11 (after starting at 4) it was time for a break and a quick trip to the dep for a beer. We each purchased a tall boy and then headed back out onto the course. The boys were really coveting my gaiters by now. You see my pants were pretty much dry (they were a bit wet just above where the gaiters ended) and my feet warm and dry because no snow was able to penetrate the gaiters; unfortunately Dave had wet feet and Trev had pants that were soaked up to his knees. As a result, the two of them didn't enjoy the rest of the round as much as me. The fact that we continued to slog through knee deep snow didn't help either. By the end of the 18 holes, we were all happy to be done. For the record, I was the winner for the day, coming in at a dismal +7, Dave clinched second place with +11 and Trev finshed last with a +12.
Next time - I think snowshoes may be in order! Something along the lines of what Steve has maybe - something like these, or maybe these which are significantly cheaper.
Nice, not to rub it in but I was in shorts when I played my first round of 2008 :)
