OS X 10.5.3 update
I applied the 10.5.3 update last night to both my iMac and my MacBook. One of the big issues that I was hoping would be addressed was the stability of the wifi connection on the macbook - ever since I got the thing, it randomly drops its connection to the AP on my network. In the release notes for the update, it did mention some improvements to 802.1x stability and reliability but alas - I have not seen any such improvements since updating. I am still seeing random drops of my wifi connection. :(
The other bummer is the fact that they updated Address Book to allow syncing with your gmail contacts, but it only seems to be available to those who have an iPhone. Huh?!

So I guess you're gonna get an i-Phone, right?!
Anybody think I should open a ticket with Apple over my wifi problems? I'm still within the 90 day complimentary phone support window. I'm also well within the 1 year hardware warranty. My biggest problem is that since we don't have an Apple store here in Ottawa, I'd likely have to send my MacBook somewhere for service. Argh!
Hey Kev - I was thinking... why wouldn't you open a ticket and if they think it's a simple fix (ie: something they could do at an Apple store in <60 minutes), then bring it with you when you to on the DG weekend and stop in at the Apple store then. I'm sure Trev wouldn't object to going to an Apple store... don't know about the other guys... but you could always drop it off, play a round and pick it up or something like that. At least that way, you don't have to be apart from your baby for too long.
I thought about doing just that actually Jules. Two things though - not sure if they'd have an issue looking at it in the states when I purchased it here (online actually) and the other big issue is that I'm not sure I want to call their call centre - I'm sure I wont like talking to level 1 support. :)
Do you think they'd answer the phone if you called the store? You could call the store in Syracuse and tell them your dilemma and find out if they'd have an issue looking at it despite you having bought on-line. If not, then bring it in and see. If they can't fix it, then try dealing with the level 1 support... and tell us what they found in case it would fix ours!! Our issue isn't really the same though - ours just can't reconnect all the time when we close the lid or it goes to sleep, we hardly ever lose the connection when we're on the computer.
You should never lose your connection to your wireless router (or access point in my case) and if you do - it should reconnect automatically! Anyways, I suspect if I take it into the store - to attempt to show them my issue - that it wont manifest itself. Also, I've read that the issue doesn't exist if you're using an apple AP (like an airport extreme or express) and I would assume that's what they are using in their store so... Anyways, I'll probably take the laptop with me when we go anyways and if we're in the neighbourhood then I'll stop in.
I had my laptop serviced at Compusmart (down by Costco on Merivale), they have a service department and they will work through AppleCare (it's authorized).
Did you check the log file /var/log/system.log to see if there's any information in there? Are you sure it's not your router?
- Andy
No - I haven't really done much in the way of trying to debug the problem, mostly because it seems to be pretty widespread. As for if I'm sure it's not the router - yes, I'm quite sure. I've never had a problem with it when using my work laptop (a windows machine) AND my airport express doesn't have any problems keeping a connection. Good info on Compusmart though - thanks for that.
